There is a tremendous amount of work that has to be carried out in bring you this beauty pageant, from the organizers, contestants and everyone else involved.

Most of us keep track of the results as they are shared on Facebook. As this is one of the biggest events of the Harvest Festival, the venue is usually packed.

We are hours away from the Pesta Kaamatan celebrations for 2013. If you are in Kota Kinabalu, do try to make you way to this event in Penampang, at the KDCA center.

Unduk Ngadau Kaamatan 2013: Just Hours To Go

As I write this, the finals of the Unduk Ngadau Kaamatan 2013 is just hours away. I cannot imagine what is going on in the minds of the contestants. They have had a busy week and in between fulfilling their obligations, they have to prepare themselves physically and mentally.

It is now 11.30pm on the 29th of May 2013. I was out having dinner with someone from New Zealand early and the rain was coming down hard. As we caught up on old times, I could not help but wonder at the preparations that must be taking place at KDCA.

Part of the attraction are the traditional houses built in native style and I am sure the rain did not help matters. At least it did bring down the temperature.

Remember to charge up your digital cameras and video recorders. The Harvest Festival celebrations is a great photo opportunity and it only comes around once a year.

Unduk Ngadau Kaamatan 2013: 30th May 2013

The Unduk Ngadau Kaamatan Pageant is all about natural beauty and what this pageant means for the Kadazandusun culture. From far flung places like Pagalungan in the interior of Sabah to Kinabatangan, this is one of the major events of the year. Native beauties from small kampungs and sub-district, and those from the city are brought together to see who gets to be selected as the Unduk Ngadau Kaamatan 2013.

I am told that the Kadazans call it Tadau Tagazo do Kaamatan. The winner will act as an ambassador for Sabah, to promote Sabah and to attend functions organized by the Kadazandusun Cultural Association (KDCA).

This is also an opportunity for local fashion designers to showcase their evening wear and accessories. Fashion for the Unduk Ngadau Kaamatan has a more traditional flavor, unlike other modern beauty pageants.

“This is a very special event as the beauty pageant itself is a very unique blend of legendary tales yet timeless. The title comes from the ethnic word Runduk Tadau which means the girl crowned by the sunlight. In Rungus Language, Runduk means to communicate, and Tadau means the sun, therefore Unduk Ngadau translates to communicate with Sunsu (Kinohiringan) or God asking for blessing of sunlight.”

As most of you may know, Unduk Ngadau Kaamatan is the local native beauty pageant held every year on the 30th and 31st of May. For many, this is the highlight of the festival and it is one of the longest running beauty pageant in Sabah, Malaysia.

The event starts at the beginning of May, with preliminaries at the district level across the whole of Sabah. 40 Unduk Ngadau from their respective districts will meet at the grand finals on the 31st May 2013.

Unlike most beauty pageants, the Unduk Ngadau represents the ideals of the Kadazandusun people. More than beauty, they represent compassion, humility and gentleness of the spirit. The legend of Unduk Ngadau is one of love for her people and of sacrifice.
